Lotte Laserstein
An exceptional artist

As one of the first women to study at the Berlin Art Academy, she was quickly celebrated as an absolute star. Unfortunately, her career was abruptly interrupted by the seizure of power by the National Socialists and she fled to Sweden. Unfortunately she was not able to develop her career according to her talent and so it is very late that the Städl and the Berlinische Galerie draw attention with this retrospective to a whole great artist of the 20th century. I was able to discover her at a very small but very special exhibition in Weimar years ago and have since become a great lover of her very own wonderful portrait style. Very succinct this naturalistic Nordic realism and as wonderful as a Lucien Freud or a Max Lieberman. Subtly and at the same time demanding at eye level, she captivates the viewer.
