Gabriele Münter

in Murnau am Staffelsee

Photos + Text: Markus Hilzinger | 2018-08-09

In Murnau am Staffelsee everything seems to be in perfect order as it was in the times of Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandisky.

The unique landscape is unbelievably photogenic. Gently sloping hills lead to a crystal clear lake with idyllic Baroque style onion domes under a pure sun.
The artist couple created an oasis of creativity and artistic exchange in Murnau, hosting colleagues such as Marianne von Werefkin, Franz Marc, Alexei Jawlensky, August Macke, and many others.
The beautiful summer house with giant hydrangea bushes is a true gem revealing brief intimate glimpses of their life back then.
We were also impressed by the painted furniture and walls, the stair stringers, the very successful restoration of the building, and of course the paintings of the artist.
A worthwhile trip from Munich via a one hour train ride.
Many thanks to a wonderful guide, Dr. Simon Herrmann, Deputy Editor-in-chief and Style Director of AD Germany.
