A classicist jewel

Schloss Wilhelmshöhe Kassel

Photos + Text: Markus Hilzinger | 2018-08-29

Built in 1786 in just 12 years, Schloss Wilhelmshöhe is today home to one of the best art galleries of the Old Masters.
William the VIII’s fine passion for art collecting is shown through unique paintings by Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Rubens, van Dyk, etc ...
The castle once consisted of three buildings, the central building, the churches and the Weißenstein wing. It was then completed with two connectors in order to reach the other wings with dry feet.
In the church wing is still a small chapel in which marriages take place.
The perfectly preserved Weißenstein wing shows how the residents once lived.
Among others, it was home of Jerome Bonaparte, the youngest brother of Napoleon.  He was one of his shadow kings who were distributed after the  french victories throughout Europe.
Called "König Lustig“ (king funny) by the Kasselers, his German was probably very rudimentary and consisted mainly of the sentence: "heute wieder lustig“ (today shall also be amusing) which means, the few years of his reign were a permanent Ibiza-like party atmosphere.
