CARL LEGIEN
a Bauhaus city in renovated splendor
Text and Photos: Markus Hilzinger | Berlin 2020
Bruno Taut created a Bauhaus Pearl with his home town Carl Legien, between 1928 and 1930 in Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin.
On a small floor space, he succeeded in creating a wonderful housing estate in the form of a row of buildings with round corner balconies all around, in keeping with the settlement construction movement of the time.
The small budget was balanced with love of detail and a cheerful colour scheme, and the manageable apartment sizes score with a good floor plan and bright apartments.
Right now in Berlin you can rediscover the wonderful architecture by bike.
